Making a splash at Canterbury Aquatic and Tennis Centre

Canterbury College opens the Canterbury Aquatic and Tennis Centre to the community

The swimmers were off the mark, diving into the stunning blue waters of the new swimming pool at the Canterbury Aquatic and Tennis Centre. It was the first official race in the 50m Olympic swimming pool, conducted as the finale event at the official opening and blessing on 10 November 2020.

Joining in with the spectators cheering from the grandstands was Steve Connelly, our Director of Sport and Community Development. Sitting on the new grandstands surrounded by the impressive new facilities, with the cheering crowd around, it’s not hard to envision the positive contribution the centre will make to the college, and to the local community.

Canterbury College is located in Logan, south of Brisbane. In recent years, the college has developed exceptional sporting facilities to complement its comprehensive curriculum infrastructure. With the opening of the new Aquatic and Tennis Centre, sporting facilities now include:

  • A 400m Mondo surface running track and high jump and javelin areas

  • A 50m Olympic swimming pool

  • Eight tennis courts (hardcourt surface)

As part of Canterbury College’s commitment to being an integral part of the local community, the college wanted to provide open access, so students and non-students alike could gain the benefits of the fantastic sporting facilities. Through discussions with industry leaders in tennis and swimming, it was decided to establish a not-for-profit entity, separate from, but intrinsically linked with, the College.

The vision was that under a new, separate legal entity, both students and non-students could participate in sports under a sporting organisation structure and participate in local sporting competitions.

CPR Group, together with a working group from the Canterbury College leadership team, set up the new association, Canterbury Taipans Inc. CPR Group helped the association develop a robust governance structure, a constitution and bylaws.

“Steve immediately found his place of affinity with us. From the first phone call, he understood who we are as a school and what we were setting out to achieve and he has helped and guided us get to where we needed to be.

He is extremely professional but also already a critical friend, supporter and actually part of the Canterbury ‘team’. He truly is an expert in his field with the ability to answer any question we throw at him.

He came to us as a consultant but is now a part of us and we look forward to the relationship continuing now even after the Taipans Club is set up and running.”

- Mr Paul Diete, Canterbury College Deputy Principal

Membership, learn to swim and tennis classes are now open to the community. See more here: https://canterbury.qld.edu.au/canterbury-taipans/
